Doctors Should Know Better

I am also amazed when doctors don't ask about water consumption when trying to help with a problem. For instance I had a problem with not enough tears being produced in my eyes. My Optomologist installed plugs in my tear ducts to reduce the drainage from my eyes. The damn things bothered me so I had them taken out. I started drinking more water and guess what... more tears.

Water

We don't drink enough water. Well, I sometimes don't and I would be willing to guess that you don't either. You should be drinking at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day.

Did you know that:

60-75% of our bodies consist of water
22% of our bones are water
92% of our blood is made of water
75% of our brains are made of water

Water is used to cool the body, remove waste, metabolize fat, maintain muscle tone and skin tone.

Traditional thought says you should have 64-80 ounces of water per day. I have also seen recommendations that ask for half your weight in ounces of water. So if you weight 150 lbs, you should be drinking 75 ounces a day.

If you drink caffeinated beverages like coffee, tea or soda - these don't count and in fact you need to drink some extra water to compensate for the diuretic effects they have.

Personally I have distilled water delivered. Tap water is very unpredictable and contains a great number of things I personally don't want to digest (link to reports). If you do this, look into buying a water cooler somewhere instead of renting it from the water delivery company. In my case the water cooler cost was paid for after six months - now my total cost is less. I've also picked up a pitcher sized water filter that I use for cooking with. I've noticed a difference in the taste of the food - especially boiled things like pasta.

The other problems with tap water is fluoride and chlorine. Neither of which is good for you in any quantity. See my fluoride page for information specific to that. Chlorine can be removed by boiling for five minutes or leaving it out in an open container overnight. Chlorine among things destroys the bacteria in your digestive system that break down food. That is bad.
