question Release candidates for 2.0 on the horizon ( December 22, 2006, 04:57:12 PM )
I know I have said time and time again that a new release is coming... it is really.  Right now I am into the final stages of getting the bridging working.  The only thing that can delay this release is the addition of new functionality that I really really want to work in to this release...    But those are surprises... if I do them.  We will see.

I hope to have the release candidate out by the end of this year (2006).  We will see.

thumbup Announcement mailing list to move to Mailman / Explosivo ( December 22, 2006, 04:53:00 PM )
I will be moving all announcements from the current ccmail implementation to use a mailman account provided by Explosivo (www.explosivo.com).  This will make it easier for me to keep up with announcements.  So you may start getting announcements from a new account soon.

xx Debian Linux installed ( August 01, 2006, 06:40:09 PM )
I've migrated from Gentoo linux to Debian linux.  Basically, Gentoo was fine but the compile everything started getting a bit old.  So I tried Debian "testing" which is destined to become the next release named "Etch".

Overall?  The installation was fine, pretty easy.  The package management is pretty nice also.

So currently we are running, Gentoo, Debian, OpenBSD, OSX 10.2, OSX 10.3 and a box for games with Windows.

I'd recommend Debian to anyone considering linux at this point.  It gets you there pretty easily.

question New way of seeding ( July 30, 2006, 09:12:16 PM )
In a last ditch effort to get some squash this year, I am going to try a second planting of cucumbers and zucchini.  Because its almost August  I'd like to get them in as fast as possible.  To that end I am going to try to germinate the seeds in some moist paper towels in zip lock baggies.  Hopefully this will shorten the 7-14 day seedling period.  I tried this in a different lifetime with non-vegetable seeds, and it seems to work well.  The biggest worry is damaging the roots when you extract them from the paper towels.

The damned vine boreing bugs ate all my other vine like plants, so this is an effort to bypass their egg hatching season.  With any luck we will still get something out the garden.  I plan on putting some new cucumber plants in big kitty little buckets and have them grow up a plant hanger on the front porch. I am also going to try to grow two zucchini out there.

More on this later

thumbup All settled down ( July 27, 2006, 09:04:56 PM )

We also are finally settled into the new house.  Only a few things left to do - will it ever end?

In other news:  I will be in the future redoing my web site into seperate ones.

Fistfullofcode.com - will retain all computer & technology related things

SourceOfBrightness.com - will take on all family / spirtuality / gardening type stuff.

Maybe a third one, but I am not sure on that.

Hope everyone is well - thanks for stopping by.

exclamation Do you? No seriously do you? Stop kidding around... ( July 27, 2006, 09:02:37 PM )
Well we finally got married.  After a whirlwind romance, a torrid love affair and a long getting to know you period (in that order) we have finally settled down and tied the knot.   The wedding is covered at http://wedding.fistfullofcode.com

We don't have pictures up there yet, but that is where they will be when we do them.

Thanks to everyone who helped, attended, and even to those that just stayed out of the way!

question Lost and Found: Found in the garden ( August 28, 2005, 05:23:25 PM )
Christi came across this yesterday in the garden...

A big friggin spider - click to view

Update - the link this was going to is gone.  It was a big "black and yellow argiope" apparently.

thumbup Out of my coma ( August 28, 2005, 05:07:32 PM )
Well, I was not really in a coma, but for some reason just have not updated the photos or text here in a while.  Things are wrapping up in the garden - the cucumbers are gone (pickling cukes had a good season), the zuccinin have been eradicated by a nasty larva that gets into the root and eats the inside.  The Winter squash has been attacked by squash bugs - which as far as I can tell simply cause blemishes on the vegetable when they suck out the juice.

We've still got lots of tomatoes, eggplants and carrots to go.  We've learned a lot from this year, but I have to say - and Christi would probably agree - we did a darned good job for our first crack at it.  The biggest thing we did wrong that I can tell are:

  • Not enough room between some viney plants
  • Not enough trimming of tomato plants early on
  • Need Water early in the day, automatic timer
  • Trim male blossoms on some plants
  • More weed control (mulch, plastic, etc)
  • Cut off vegetables instead of pulling
  • Needed earlier, better support for peas

Things we did good, but will improve next year

  • Most tomatoes will be hanging, or tied better on the ground
  • Netting for peas
  • Vertical cucmbers, not on the ground
  • Crawlers on the perimeter of the garden
  • Posts to guide hose need to be much bigger
  • Plug ends of bamboo so wasps don't move in
  • Thin seedlings more enthusastically
  • Marigolds and Nasturium in pots not in garden
  • Plant in the raised bed earlier (better drainage)

We also planted a second crop of beans and peas... we will see how that goes

sad PhpDocumenter code will no longer be distributed ( July 24, 2005, 05:47:07 PM )
Due to the size of the download (90KB) I will no longer include the phpDocumenter output as part of the distribution.  The tags will be inside the files still, so feel free to generate your own.  They will also remain available online for the latest dev version.

thumbup New CPMFETCH Documentation and manual ( July 24, 2005, 04:52:53 PM )
I've been converting the documentation over to a docbook format.  This means it will be easier to maintain, distribute and most of all - for you to use.   As always, contributions are more than welcome.  Just submit it to me and if its explained clearly enough I will add it in.  You'll get credit in the manual - your own bit of internet fame.

New docs: http://www.fistfullofcode.com/projects/copperminefetch/manual/index.html

Some of the pages are not formatted that much, but I have as much as the old docs did, so they are not going to be maintained much longer.  Comments, suggestions and contributions welcome.

thumbup Development series 1.5.x started ( July 24, 2005, 04:49:56 PM )
Yes, the next development code is out and up for download.  This will be a short cycle as I do not want stable releases to be so far and few between.   So far in this release (1.5.2) I've added the following:

  • Select photos by owner name (via owner= in source statement)
  • Added %e  to display owners E-Mail
  • Added %H  to display owners web site (Home page)
  • Added %I  to display owners Interests
  • Added %l  to display owners last visit (lower case L)
  • Added %L  to display owners location
  • Added %O  to display owners occupation
  • Added %r to display owners registration date

I'm running out of tweaks, so this will probably be a short development cycle.

exclamation Weight loss going well ( July 24, 2005, 05:11:17 AM )
Well, I've since jumped from the calorie counting diet to the weight watchers diet - it seems to make a bit more sense and the idea of counting in POINTS(TM) is much easier to take than adding up to 1500 each day.  So far I am down about 20 lbs.  Going well, no complaints.  I have a tool for my Palm pilot that helps me track each thing, and massive lists are available online for everything from store bought items to local restaurants.  You'd be amazed at the crap restaurants are feeding you.  For example, the Chili's bacon burger with fries has 2091 calories and 111 grams of fat.  The Awesome Blossom has a paltry 2882 calories and 222 grams of fat.  I don't want to sound like I am picking on Chili's...  They are all like that.  In fact, some like 99 will not even give out information.  My new goal in life is to find the absolute worst restaurant food item in existance and also the worst food item dressed up to sound healty.  More on that later...

sad Time to die... I mean diet... yeah diet ( July 06, 2005, 04:27:38 AM )
Well, after getting back my latest health screening test, and seeing how my cholesteral has not dropped one bit since I have been eating very soundly over the past five years - I decided it was time to lose some weight.  I checked out a Body Mass Index calculator, which based on width, height, weight and age, placed me firmly in the OBESE category.  Okay... chubby maybe, a few extra pounds definately, big boned - for sure, but obese???  Anyway, there is no way the internet lies - so its time to diet.  I tried counting calories for a few days which was fun, but did not take everything into account - so now its on to weight watchers.  A friend explained how it all works and I even got a nifty program for my Palm IIIc that helps with a lot of it.  So we will see... I've lost about 10 lbs in two weeks - I need 3.5 more to get myself into the very overwieght class...  Maybe I can shave my head to get rid of some... hmmmmmm

question Even More Love! ( June 17, 2005, 07:43:08 PM )
So in the wake of the world claiming we are violating the Geneva Convention, and depriving individuals of the rights afforded them under the convention and general decency, the Rush Limbaugh show is selling "GITMO" T-Shirts commemorating how proud we are a nation that we can chain people to floors and deprive them of food and water for length periods of time.  Bathroom reading material was provided (Koran).  And just to show that Rush and his gang of "not-being-able-to-think-for-themselves" self proclaimed ditto-heads are really a well rounded bunch - due to listener demand (I kid you not) today they began also selling GITMO T-Shirts in sizes XXX and XXXX.

In other news, Rush attacked the worlds rain forest for causing too much pollution the other day... The pollution is the result of deforestation activites - best to be rid of those pesky tree's once and for all!  Amazing stuff.
