Tux the penguin

Why a penguin for a mascot?

"Linus likes penguins". Linus is the creator of the Linux kernel, which when combined with the GNU Unix tools becomes the GNU/Linux that everyone knows, loves or fears. For more info see the "history of Tux" link below. The above image was created by the GGI project

Linux

This section is under heavy revision, check back soon

Every year I make a pilgrimage. Its an annual thing that has always had me return back to my starting point after a few months - Windows. Once a year, when the weather is right and my work load is light, I set off for the promised land - Linux on my desktop.

I have been a strong advocate of server side linux for along time. I've worked with a few of the *nix's and really have come to like Linux the best overall. I've run firewalls and web servers for years for my business (ffoc link www.Explosivo.com) and had great success and just a wonderful time with them.

I have even moved to desktop Linux... Not sure how long I have been running Linux on my notebook at this point. I've got it set up pretty nice and everything works. I have found replacements for every single thing I did under windows - with software that is just as good or even better than the Windows versions I had. Also it has been much cheaper and much more reliable. I started with KDE 3.1 and stuck with that through KDE 3.2.x. I recommend that for beginners. After that I decided I was wasting alot of processor time on stuff I did not use. So I switched to Fluxbox. This is for hardcore users who just want a desktop. Its great, clean, takes a few minutes to compile. Love the flexibility. But like I said, its pretty hardcore, so don't try switching to it from Windows. You'll be like a deer in the headlights.

Do I still have Windows? Yes, there is a partition on my machine that has Windows. I have it for three reasons:

  1. I own a bunch of M$ Windows games
  2. Quickbooks does not run in Linux (yet)
  3. Did I say three? Hmm...
